Toss Up: UltraViolet Sound
Thursday, July 30, 2009 @ 1:04 AM 100% synthesized and straight from a 1980s dancefloor, UVS is up in this! And for anyone opposed to the sound of frantic 808 drum beats - you will hate this band. With a passion. But for anyone who can tolerate an album full of club songs that average about 5-minutes in length per track will find them pretty sweet. I'm still on the fence, however. UltraViolet Sound is kinda clever though. Emphasis on kinda. I like that their current, so-called club anthem is called 'Obsessive Compulsive Dancing.' But the lyrics are kinda dumb. And they're just... there. The chorus in 'BABYZ' is strictly limited to "Shut up little baby, you're a PUNK! Little baby - get CRUNK! Little baby!" Repeat. Lots of times. How you would perform that kind of song live confuses me. After a while though, they all start to sound the same with their samples and their shoulder jerking beats. Their lead girl predicts that 2010 will be their year. We'll just have to wait and see about that. Labels: 80s, Babyz, electric, Obessive Compulsive Dancing, Toss Up, UltraViolet Sound, UVS |

Follow Sounds Good via Dashboard!
Monday, July 27, 2009 @ 10:46 PM The standard 'Follow This Blog' widget provided by Blogger is so ugly in my opinion that I simply did away with it. However, I would love it if you followed me via Blogger in spite of that little widget problem! So here's what you should do in three easy steps. 1) Sign into your Blogger account - and if you have Gmail, you automatically have a Blogger account. 2) Under the 'Reading List' and 'Blogs I'm Following,' you should see the 'ADD' button. Click on it! 3) Type in the URL of the blog [ http://thesoundsgoodblog.blogspot.com - it's long I know, I'm sorry ] and click 'Next.' And now you're done! You'll show up on my dashboard as the latest follower almost instantly. How easy was that? Labels: follow Sounds Good via dashboard |

The Independents: Ra Ra Riot
@ 10:35 PM I thought it very appropriate to go back and talk more about them. Ra Ra Riot, part string section and part indie rockers, has a soft and romantic sound. It's kind of whimsical as well. Those that prefer a sound that's heavier, louder or aggressive won't be able to stand it. It seems like it's meant for gentle souls, poets and aspiring artists. They might sound right at home in a theater - because a coffee shop is too predictable. It's hard to put into words, but Ra Ra Riot manages to be incredibly sweet without being annoying. My only qualm is that a couple of their songs could be interpreted as awfully emo. They have a song titled 'Dying Is Fine.' Don't worry, it's not a tearjerker, it's actually surprisingly upbeat. They've got a bright future ahead of them - as if doing shows with Death Cab for Cutie and The Killers wasn't already a sign of success. Labels: Discovery, Dying Is Fine, Ra Ra Riot, symphony rock, The Independents |

Heatseekers: Sam Sparro
Sunday, July 26, 2009 @ 8:43 PM My latest obsession is the Radio 1's Live Lounge. Where a wide range of exceptional, well-known musicians perform a cover of a song from a polarizing genre. IE - The boys of McFly lay down a crazy bass line on their jazzy version of 'I Kissed A Girl'; Bats for Lashes' slow version of Use Somebody by Kings of Leon is almost gospel-like; Dizzee Rascal goes improv on his cover of 'That's Not My Name' and The Last Shadow Puppets makes Rihanna's 'SOS' mysterious, dark and sexy. Almost all of the covers give the original's a run for their money (with the exception of Girls Aloud and Lady Gaga). The most impressive of all the covers was Sam Sparro's version of Estelle and Kanye West's 'American Boy.' Holy CRAP. What an incredible voice. And Sam Sparro's rap owns Kanye's 16-bars. I had to hear more. On his other songs he sounds vaguely reminiscent of John Legend - if all his songs were set to a Calvin Harris beat. 'Cottonmouth' is gangsta-geek-chic and samples some 80's funk tune that makes you wanna sway. 'Black and Gold,' the song that turned Sparro into a Grammy-nominee, is full of old school grooves and lives up to the title of 'Best Dance Recording.' Then there's '21st Century Life' that I think sounds just like a Basement Jaxx/Earth, Wind & Fire mashup. No lie. It's R&B dance-pop electrofunk. It'll make more sense once you hear it and some additional songs on his MySpace. Basically, white boys with soul needs to become its own sub-genre. Sam can be the poster child. New album drops at the end of August. Labels: 21st Century Life, American Boy, Black and Gold, Cottonmouth, Estelle, Heatseekers, Kanye, Live Lounge, Sam Sparro, video |

Heatseekers: The Morning Of
Monday, July 13, 2009 @ 4:45 PM I know it probably is an unfair comparison, but The Morning Of is like Jack's Mannequin with a female vocalist thrown in for brownie points. And less emo. A LOT less emo. Actually, The Morning Of is just so... damn delightful! There's so much soul and rhythm in songs like 'Violins and Trees' and 'Let Your Spirit Soar'. Then you hear 'Reverie' which completely uplifts you and 'Shine' doesn't sound beautiful - it feels beautiful despite following the slow start, loud finish formula. This is why I love piano rock (and I don't care what they call themselves, this is piano rock!). When it's done right it can't fail. This goes for their new Alicia Keys cover, too. Have you ever heard a bad cover of an Alicia Keys song? Because I have. Thanks to those horrendous Making the Band 3 auditions. Her songs aren't just about hitting the high notes, it's about emotion and really feeling the lyrics. Extra props to them for not ruining 'No One' (although they left out the call and response 'Oh! Oh! Oh!' part at the end, wtf). Jessica Leplon's voice is sharp in some places, but it's never bad. And I don't have a particular closing statement. Other than they rock... and I would be very pleased to hear them on a TV show. Labels: Alicia Keys, Heatseekers, Jack's Mannequin, Let Your Spirit Soar, Making the Band 3, No One, piano rock, Reverie, Shine, The Morning Of, Violins and Trees |

Future Hit: Lil Jon and Swizz Beatz - I Do
Friday, July 10, 2009 @ 5:27 PM I keep hearing this on the radio and I gotta admit... I scramble to turn up the volume everytime. For some reason I can't explain it feels great to blast another Lil' Jon song where the sole purpose is to get you crunk. Not sexed up. Not high. Just crunk. And usually I can't stand when Swizz Beatz raps (mostly because he sucks at anything beyond catchy hooks), but I'm so happy to have another party anthem I don't even mind. He redeems himself by being such a bomb producer. And the Snoop verse needs no commentary. Listen. Now. Labels: crunk, Future Hit, I Do, Lil Jon, Snoop Dogg, Swizz Beatz |

Future Hit (As if you didn't already know): Paramore - Ignorance
@ 5:23 PM Yes, I'm a horrible person. And a bad fan. I'm attempting to find more leaked Paramore songs on YouTube from their soon-to-be released album 'Brand New Eyes.' This is the only one I could find. It's great and complete with snarky-lyrics and dancable, high energy guitar riffs. Just like their previous hits! Guess they're following the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' mantra. Which I don't really have a problem with. "Ignorance" is my new best friend and my new favorite song. When I mean Future Hit, mark my words. It will top the charts. Now if only I can find a studio version of "Where The Lines Overlap." Labels: Brand New Eyes, Future Hit, Ignorance, Paramore, Where The Lines Overlap |

The Independents: Amy LaVere
Thursday, July 2, 2009 @ 10:27 PM The singer, songwriter, bass player, gypsy jazz musician and Memphis resident - Amy LaVere - kicks more ass than a Tai Chi class. She's finally getting some of the recognition she deserves thanks to MTV and Craig Brewer's fantastically amazing $5 Cover - a Memphis music and film series. And I'm not being bias. It's a very interesting show. Her track history is extensive. Amy's talent and lyrics are mature, brooding and beautiful - but there's this sexy, bluesy edge to it, too. Songs like "Washing Machine" are more blues than jazz and it sounds good - pardon the pun. Did I mention she's a lead singer who plays bass? And is armed with a glitter pistol on her second album cover - "Anchors and Anvils"? Her latest is titled, "Died of Love". Hear it at her MySpace page and in various episodes of $5 Cover. You can see her acting skills in $5 Cover as well. Labels: $5 Cover, Amy LaVere, Anchors and Anvils, Craig Brewer, Died of Love, MTV, The Independents, Washing Machine |

Future Hit: Justin Bieber
@ 10:25 PM Meet Usher's pre-teen protégé, Justin Bieber - the squeaky voiced version of former Mickey Mouse clubber J. Timberlake. Quite a few of his covers have struck YouTube gold and his channel has over 3 million views (and triple that per video). He isn't mainstream yet... exactly. So I'll call future hit for now, Toss Up for his career. Cause really it's only a matter of time before Radio Disney picks him up or someone puts "One Time" in a movie soundtrack. Listen to his cover of JT's "Cry Me A River," then check his cover of Chris 'Woman-Beater' Brown's "With You." Labels: Cry Me A River, Future Hit, Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake, One Time, Toss Up, Usher, With You |

Hey! I'm Melody, yes it's my real name and I kinda love it! I love music, art, film, television and any overall combination of them all. One of these days I will create a tv show about a band of traveling musicians and the insane music bloggers that stalk them with original songs and Glee-like dance numbers every week. Until then, I'm a part-time fan, full-time journalist. New music is the most addicting thing to me, next to lemon pound cake and fresh baked cookies. Whenever I have free time I'm with friends or wondering why I don't read books as much as I used to. I love Jesus Christ and NOT ashamed of it. Jesus Freaks, where you at!? My day is not complete unless I watch the news and I am a terrible, terrible procrastinator. But I'm getting better at it <3 Life is about the journey afterall, not the destination. Unless you're going on vacation. Or patiently awaiting graduation. Then it is all about the destination. |
