Michael Jackson passes away - Just now sinking in
Saturday, June 27, 2009 @ 12:09 AM
As you already know, the greatest and most controversial pop star to ever exist, Michael Jackson, passed away yesterday. I've been kind of glued to my TV watching all the details and all the music videos for the last 40-something hours. I have no links for you, other than this YouTube link to his videos if you want to watch them too.
But I do have this pretty great picture of today's cover of USA Today. The man and the legend is gone, but his music will indeed live forever. The world will be mourning for quite some time. Labels: King of Pop, Michael Jackson, USA Today |

Covers Day
Thursday, June 25, 2009 @ 1:39 PM
Harley Knox - a random, but very likable pop-alternative?-rock cover of Soulja Boy's "Kiss Me Thru the Phone"
Doug Neumann - the jazzy Frank Sinatra version of Panic at the Disco's "But It's Better if You Do" (His album will have other covers from The Hush Sound, Cobra Starship, Gym Class Heroes and The Academy Is...). Purplish Rain - SPIN's tribute issue to Prince came out on the 23rd. You gotta buy the magazine to get the 'free' album though. Lez Zeppelin - the more famous (and the better) of the two all-girl Led Zeppelin cover bands I've heard. They'll make you proud to be a woman. If... you're a woman. EDIT: Framing Hanley - A hard rock alternative version of Lil' Wayne's "Lollipop" that was too crunk to omit! Labels: But It's Better if You Do, Doug Neumann, Framing Hanley, Harley Knox, Kiss Me Thru the Phone, Led Zeppelin, Lez Zeppelin, Lollipop, Panic at the Disco, Purplish Rain, Soulja Boy, SPIN Magazine |

New Video: Green Day - 21 Guns
Monday, June 22, 2009 @ 2:23 PM The second epic, amazing official music video of "21 Guns" from Green Day's latest album - 21st Century Breakdown - is on their MySpace page. In HD. For a limited time. Or until someone rips it from their page and puts it on YouTube. Labels: 21 Guns, 21st Century Breakdown, Green Day, New Video |

Future Hit: Franz Ferdinand - No You Girls
Thursday, June 18, 2009 @ 2:20 PM NOTE: Couldn't embed the actual video, but I did link it below. Now, this is not just a product of me watching Nocturnal State. I've been a Franz fan for about three years now. They first pulled me in with their insanely catchy songs 'Take Me Out' and 'Do You Want To'. Then I discovered 'Jacqueline,' 'I'm Your Villain,' 'Michael' and 'The Fallen'. Among others. They understand what pop is. They know what a party is. They just have these hooks and riffs in this particular song that - I don't know how to explain it. Just watch. The style of "No You Girls" with the chicks dancing around them in multi-colored clothes reminds me of Calvin Harris' techno hetero-anthem "The Girls" (If you haven't seen this video, get with the other 2 million people that already have, ok?). Pure entertainment all around. I hope FF keeps making music for another three years. Labels: Blame It On The Girls, Calvin Harris, Do You Want To, Franz Ferdinand, Future Hit, music video, No You Girls, Nocturnal State, Take Me Out |

Toss Up: Carolina Liar
@ 1:47 PM This is Part 2 of the Mass Update I was just talking about. I first heard this song on an Overstock commercial. Then I heard it on the radio and I liked it, but not that much. Then I saw the music video (finally) and ended up loving it. Maybe because the lead singer of Carolina Liar looks like a faux Jesus. Maybe because I took the repeated 'Oh Lord' in the chorus for a Christian song. Then I just admitted to myself it was because of the choir at the end. Reminded me of "All These Things That I've Done" by The Killers. Very, very pretty. Both songs. VH1 has them listed as 'Artists On The Rise' but I think they'll just be one-hit wonders. Their other songs don't have the same power. But I could always be wrong. Labels: All These Things That I've Done, Carolina Liar, music video, Show Me What I'm Looking For, The Killers, Toss Up, VH1 |

Future Hit: The Airborne Toxic Event
@ 1:41 PM This mass update is courtesy of MTV and VH1. I was up at 6 AM watching Nocturnal State and AMTV, since that's the only time of day you can see actual music videos. And I actually saw some stuff I've been missing out on. Like The Airborne Toxic Event! Apparently Rolling Stone Magazine and U2 are fans. Pitchfork Media doesn't like them, but I do. And that's all that really matters. Hard to believe they're still kind of under the radar... It's very melodic and they have lyrics that always seem to tell a realistic story. And really I can't think of a reason why one wouldn't like this. Unless you pull a Pitchfork and compare them to The Strokes. I've also linked you up to their most popular video and song right now - "Sometime Around Midnight." Enjoy! Labels: AMTV, MTV, music video, Nocturnal State, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Sometime Around Midnight, The Airborne Toxic Event, U2, VH1 |

The Independents: Fancy Me Yet
Wednesday, June 17, 2009 @ 2:47 PM
Have you ever listened to a group for the first time and was shocked by how much you liked it? Although Fancy Me Yet, a Miami indie rock band, has cute guys and a former Latin Grammy-nominated singer going for them, I was skeptical. Three piece bands rarely have variety, crossover appeal or (in the case of MySpace) enough songs for an accurate feel of their real sound. Fancy Me Yet has all of that and SO much more. There's a subtle power in the blending of the guitars, drums and piano. In songs like 'Then There's You' the sleepy smoothness in the vocals catches you off guard. It sounds like lead girl Natasha (of JD Natasha fame - listen to the Hey Ya cover while you're there, it's genius) is singing through a filter and it sounds oddly romantic. Their other songs, like the uptempo pop rock toe-tapper 'Skip The Previews' is pretty right off the bat and loud when it counts. 'Amusing Me' is a catchy example of how good a song sounds when the vocalists know how to harmonize; while 'Edge of a Turn' and 'Breaking News' have these gentle touches of techno in the electric keyboard and the snare drum. And did I mention that the girl doesn't sing alllllll the songs? Variety! That's such a plus in my book. The band is in the studio as I type apparently, so even more new songs should be on the way. Please become a fan. Especially if you loved JD Natasha in another life - which is how I stumbled across them. It's not the same sound by any means (which is good!), but the real rock and the originality is just as present in Fancy Me Yet. Makes me wish there was an album ready. Or that I lived in Miami. Labels: Amusing Me, Breaking News, Edge of a Turn, Fancy Me Yet, JD Natasha, Said it All, Skip The Previews, The Independents, Then There's You |

The Independents: Eric Price and Sho Baraka
Sunday, June 14, 2009 @ 2:33 AM
What a weekend. Lost power after tornadoes went through the mid-south. Turned to radio for all my needs and ended up finding this awesome guy, Eric Price (fell hard for his new song "Still Holding On" - it's the first one on his MySpace, forgive the layout) while listening to a super exclusive one-hour radio show on 95.7 Hallelujah FM.
The show is called Kingdom Party. And I'm very annoyed that it's only one hour - because it's great high quality rap. Gritty, bass-heavy, you can blast this going down the street and feel good doing it, christian rap; which is an oxymoron sometimes. But I wouldn't even waste my time writing about it if it wasn't amazing. Then there is Sho Baraka's song "Kobe Bryant On Em". He has a funny take on the Lakers insanity that's been sweeping the country during the NBA finals. If my mother liked it, you will like it. Thanks for the storm, right? Would have never knew these guys existed otherwise. God bless RJ Groove. Who said radio was dead? Oh - and you wouldn't believe who is following Sounds Good on Twitter already! Labels: 95.7 Hallelujah FM, Eric Price, Kingdom Party, radio, Sho Baraka, Sounds Good Twitter, Still Holding On, The Independents |

Heatseekers: SPIN Presents Purplish Rain
@ 8:32 PM Considering all the free albums Prince gave away last year, he would approve of SPIN.com allowing free downloads of their tribute album on June 23. Save the date - cause I am! I can't wait to hear if they mess up the songs or not. But I have reason to believe it'll be okay after hearing their sample track, a cover of "When Doves Cry". There's even going to be a nice cover story about it in SPIN's July issue. Labels: Heatseekers, Prince, Purple Rain, Purplish Rain, SPIN Magazine, When Doves Cry |

Future Hit: Mika - Good Gone Girl/Blame It On The Girls
Tuesday, June 9, 2009 @ 4:29 PM The sound quality is fantastic in this fan video from Mika's European acoustic concert in April (and the camera person has steady hands too) where he played a new song 'Good Gone Girl'. The following is a video of another song, 'Blame It On The Girls', which Mika also unveiled on tour as one of the two new songs from his upcoming sophomore album. The camera is pretty shaky - but you can hear the music fine. And he's basically announcing to the audience in French that it's a new song. His fans are already hyped and they should be. Mika's debut album went multi-platinum in England. I believe they're cute and poppy enough to be just as huge as 'Grace Kelly'. Labels: Blame It On The Girls, Future Hit, Good Gone Girl, Grace Kelly, Mika |

Back Again!
@ 4:27 PM
I apologize for the way I suddenly vanished! Computer problems forced me offline - but all is well now and I'm back with some new songs and videos!
A couple things I'm working on: Some MySpace exclusives, more awesome unsigned music from The Independents, a YouTube channel and I've been wondering if I should start a Sounds Good Twitter. Decisions, decisions. I'll keep you posted! - Melody Labels: Sounds Good MySpace, The Independents, updates, YouTube? |

Are You Ready For Summer?
Tuesday, June 2, 2009 @ 4:13 PM
Billboard's 2009 Summer Music Guide has you covered.
Bookmark that page, okay? So you can keep tabs on the 125 albums coming out between now and August, 40 Music Festivals you might be able to actually attend and 13 tours you probably didn't know about. My 2009 Summer Wishlist: new Cobra Starship, The JoBros, Daughtry, Lil' Wayne, Trey Songz, Colbie Caillat, Sean Paul, Jet, Bonnaroo Musicfest, The Blink 182 and No Doubt Tours along with the (unlisted) Rock The River Tour - the one featuring Flyleaf only, please. Toss Up: Forever The Sickest Kids ft. Selena Gomez - Whoa Oh
@ 3:26 PM
There was a music video somewhere, but I can't find it :(
Well, at least Selena Gomez has a bigger 'featuring' part than Leighton Meester does in Cobra Starship's song...? And this is me trying to think of something positive to say about the song. And I'm failing. Just listen and judge for yourself. PS - Her other 'song' with Forever The Sickest Kids - an acoustic song - doesn't sound much better. Actually, it sounds considerably worse. This is the studio version without her in it. Labels: Forever The Sickest Kids, Selena Gomez, She's A Lady, Toss Up, Whoa Oh |

Hey! I'm Melody, yes it's my real name and I kinda love it! I love music, art, film, television and any overall combination of them all. One of these days I will create a tv show about a band of traveling musicians and the insane music bloggers that stalk them with original songs and Glee-like dance numbers every week. Until then, I'm a part-time fan, full-time journalist. New music is the most addicting thing to me, next to lemon pound cake and fresh baked cookies. Whenever I have free time I'm with friends or wondering why I don't read books as much as I used to. I love Jesus Christ and NOT ashamed of it. Jesus Freaks, where you at!? My day is not complete unless I watch the news and I am a terrible, terrible procrastinator. But I'm getting better at it <3 Life is about the journey afterall, not the destination. Unless you're going on vacation. Or patiently awaiting graduation. Then it is all about the destination. |
